Abstract

The objectives of the study were; (1) To know the students’ simple past tense mastery at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan in the academic year 2020/2021. (2) To know the students’ writing skill in narrative text at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan in the academic year 2020/2021, (3) To find out the significant correlation between the students’simple past tense mastery and writing skill in narrative text at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan in the academic year 2020/2021. This study was quantitative correlational study. The subjects were 13 students at eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan. The researcher used test as the research instrument to gather the data. Furthermore, the data was analyzed through pearson product-moment correlation as the quantitative procedure using SPSS 16 version. The result indicates that students’ simple past tense mastery at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan are categorized into good. The highest score is 92 and the lowest score is 32. Moreover students’ writing skill are also categorized into good. The research result shows that the highest score is 90and the lowest score is 60. In addition, the writer also found that the correlation between the students’ simple past tense mastery and writing skill in narrative text is 0.000 with a positive correlation. It means that there is similar direction relationship between the X and Y variables, if the X variable increases, the Y variable increases. After knowing the result t table of r pearson product moment with the number of subject (N) = 13 and significant level 1% is 0.958. it shows that rxy is > r table. It means that there is a correlation between students’ simple past tense mastery and writing skill. Since the result of pearson product moment is 0.958, the correlation is included into strong correlation between variables. Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted that there is a strong uphill (positive) correlation between the students’ simple past tense mastery and writing skill in narrative text at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Pabelan in the academic year 2020/2021.
