Abstract

The objective of this research is to know and explain the code-mixing and code-switching in medical problems discussion on Twitter by health professionals and their followers. This research answer two questions including the types of code-mixing and code-switching used by health professionals and their followers in medical problems discussion on Twitter and the functions of code-mixing and code-switching used by health professionals and their followers in medical problems discussion on Twitter. This research is conducted from November 23th, 2020 until March 2021. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative research method. The researcher used observation and documentation as a data collection technique. The data of this research are taken from comments of tweets posted by health professionals on their Twitter account with the limitation of this research is on the kind of tweets which discuss medical problems nowadays. Data findings showed 112 insertions, 38 alternations, 23 congruent lexicalization, 155 intra-sentential switchings, 33 inter-sentential switchings, and 16 tag-switching. Based on the result above, code-switching is frequently used than code-mixing. The researcher found the functions of code-mixing and code-switching occurs when the participants discuss a particular topic with their colleague as a group identification, to express solidarity, make a distancing, redefinition of situation, to soften or strengthen request command, to say something twice in a different language to intensify or eliminate ambiguity, as a direct quotation which may range from a stereotypical imitative speech in joking to learn citation, have a lexical need either if the speaker knows the desired expression only in one language, and as an avoidance strategy.
