Abstract

This research was conducted in order to find out the politeness strategies used by International Army in Whatsapp Group. The objective of this research is to describe the types of politeness strategies used by International Army in Whatsapp Group and to know the dominant type of politeness strategies used by International Army in Whatsapp group. Those two objective are analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s theory. The researcher used participant observation to collect the data. The data is written message from International Army from the first January to the end of January. This research used Qualitative research. To analyzed the data, the researcher used creswell theory. There are 5 steps to analyzed the data 1) Data Managing, 2) Describing, 3) Classifying, 4) Interpreting, 5) Representing. The result of this research show two important points. First, there were four types of politeness strategies that found in International Army Whatsapp Group, Bald-on record strategies, Positive Politeness Strategies, Negative Politeness Strategies, and Off record strategies. Second, the dominant type of politeness strategies used by International Army is Positive Politeness Strategies with 20 utterances, followed by Off record strategies with 8 utterances. Then 7 Bald-on Strategies. And 6 Negative strategies. Keyword: Politeness Strategies, Whatsapp, Army
