Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the utterances are used by the teachers and the students in classroom discourse. This research also discussed the types of politeness principle are used by the teachers and students in the classroom discourse. The researcher chose two English teachers and third grade students of MAN Suruh in the academic year of 2016/2017. The researcher joined in the class and recorded the activities when the teaching-learning process occurred. The data was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used the politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson and also the theory of Politeness by Geoffrey Leech. The overall finding showed that there were three types of exchange, Directing, Eliciting and Informing. From politeness principle, the writer found that the teacher used four type of strategy, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, On Record, Off Record and Say Nothing. The research also found four types of maxims used by the teacher and the students, Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Agreement Maxim and Approbation Maxim. From the result, the researcher concludes that both teachers and students conveyed politeness principle to make them feel comfortable and enjoy the teaching – learning process.
