Abstract

ABSTRACT Lestari, Nurul Dwi. 2021. AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITIES IN PARAPHRASING ENGLISH TEXT. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Hammam, M. Pd., Ph. D. This study aims to know The Eight semester students of English Education Department ability in doing paraphrase and find out the difficulties of 8th semester students of English Education Department ability in conducting paraphrase. In this study, researcher used qualitative methods. While the data collection techniques used are test and interview. The test given is in the form of giving English text to be paraphrased by the respondents. And the interview includes 10 questions about paraphrase. From the results of the study, the researcher found that the ability of the eight semester students of English Department at IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2020/2021was still unsatisfactory because some of the results of paraphrase text structures had the same structures as the original text structure. Most respondents use synonym which are considered the easiest technique and make writing look different. Most of paraphrasing results made by the respondents also have meanings that are not in accordance with the original text even though some of them have used their own language in paraphrasing. From the problem, the solution that can be done is learn about semantics and pragmatics. The two branches of language science discuss about the meaning of language and its use according the context. The difficulties they face in paraphrasing are limited vocabulary mastery and lack of confidence in the results of paraphrasing that have been made due to lack of grammar mastery.
