Abstract

This paper aims to show the compliment expressions used by English teachers in EFL classes. Then, to investigate when the English teachers use the compliment expressions in EFL classes. And to uncover the factors that influence teachers’ frequency in giving compliments to students. The data was obtained from 100 English teachers in Central Java, Indonesia at junior high school, senior high school, and vocational school. The researcher used observations, interviews, and documents to collect the data which the results were used to make a questionnaire. Then, the researcher used the questionnaire to expand the data source and strengthen the data. The result showed that good job, good, and thank you were the three most common expressions were used by the English teachers. Most of them always give the students compliments. They usually give compliments when open and close teaching-learning activities, when the students ask and answer the questions, collect assignments, get a good score, and have a good attitude. There were no significant differences between male and female teachers in giving students compliments. The teachers who have taught more than 20 years indicated that they had the highest percentage for always giving compliments to students.
