Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the types of teachers question uttered by the lecturers in English classroom, to find out the reason why the teacher mostly produce the most dominant type of teacher question, and to explore how the teacher questions toward the students’ resposes in teaching process. This research is descriptive qualitative research that is conducted in IAIN Salatiga by applying teacher questions theories. The data of this research is collected from interview and classroom observation of three English lecturers of the fourth semester in international class program of IAIN Salatiga which is recorded and then transcribed. The results of the study show that the total of questions are 112. It can be classified as yes/no question (36.6%), short answer question (18.7%), open-ended question (5.4%), display question (21.4%), referential question (17%), and imaginative question (0.9%). It means that the types of question that is used by the teacher mostly is yes/no question, to brainstorm the students, check students’ understanding, check students’ paying attention, and lead students interest to think the answer. From 112 questions, 100 of them are able to be responded by the students and 12 questions are unresponded. It means that most teacher questions are effective.
