Abstract

Nabella, Angelia Cipta Riska. 2022. “An Analysis of Students' Anxiety Level in Speaking English Viewed from Their Personality (A Study of the Sixth Semester Students at IAIN Salatiga in the Academic Year 2021/2022)”. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teachers Training and Education Faculty. State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Maslihatul Umami, M.A. The purpose of this research is to describe the level of anxiety of students in speaking English viewed from their personality. The purposes are: 1) To find out what are the students' anxiety level in speaking English viewed from their personality in the study of the sixth semester students at IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2021/2022. 2) To find out the factors which dominate in students' anxiety in speaking English viewed from their personality in the study of the sixth semester students at IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2021/2022. This study uses a type of data analysis using mixed-method research. The data collection technique used by the researcher was two questionnaires from FLCAS by Horwitz and Cope (1986) to measure students' anxiety levels and questionnaires from the Eysenck Personality Inventory (1959) to determine student personality types and interview guidelines. The research subjects were twenty-three sixth semester students at English Education Department who had problem with speaking English anxiety. The results of the research that have been carried out show that: 1) The level of anxiety in speaking for sixth semester students, according to the results of research conducted by researcher, it can be concluded that the anxiety level from the 23 participants was 2 students at the very relaxed level of anxiety (9%), 7 others at the relaxed level (30%), 11 other participants and the most at the slightly anxious level of anxiety (48%), 1 person at the anxiety level (4%) and the remaining 2 pupils experiencing the highest anxiety is very anxious (9%). There were 5 extroverts who have an anxiety level scale, 1 person is very relaxed, 2 pupils are at a relaxed level and 2 others are slightly anxious. Meanwhile, there were 18 introverts whose average scale is at the slightly anxious level. 2) There are several dominant factors in students’ anxiety in speaking English viewed from their personality, including for extroverts, the dominant factors are language factors and stage fear. For introverts, the dominant anxiety factors are peer factors, lack of confidence and shame, past experiences and irrational thoughts.
