Abstract

This is a descriptive qualitative research. This research attempts to answer the problems of the research regarding the English classroom happened in English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. They are: what types of question used by the lecturers? how is the distribution of the types of question? and what type of question is the most dominant used? In attempting to answer the problems of the research, the researcher used the theory of Dixon (1957) about the structures of questions. While in the collecting the data, the researcher applied the Written Discourse Completion Tasks (WDCT). The unit analysis in this research is designed by classifying the findings into the three types of questions that are yes no questions, whs’ questions and tag questions. Based on the analysis, there are three results in this research. First, the three types of questions proposed by Dixon (1957) based on structure of questions’ utterance are used by the English lecturers in English Education Department. Second, the distribution of the types of questions based on the structure shows the result as follow: yes no questions 71,7%, whs’ questions 26,5% and tag questions 2,8%. Third, based on the data analysis, the yes no question is the most dominant type of questions used by the English lecturers in the English Education Department.
