The aim of this research are (1) to find out whether the implementation of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) technique can improve students’ speaking skill or not and (2) to find out how far the use of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) technique improves students’ speaking skill for the second grade students of SMPN 2 Mertoyudan. The research design of this study is Classroom Action Research. It includes two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation and reflection. It can be seen from T-test calculation in cycle 1 is 13.05 and cycle 2 is 6.31. The improvement of the study is showed when the researcher conducts cycle 2. The passing grade is 76, and the target of the passing grade is 80%. The result of the post-test of cycle 2 is 100% from students. All of students can pass the passing grade, so the researcher stops the study. This indicates that by applying focus group discussion technique, the speaking skill of students can be improved.
