Abstract

ABSTRACT Wahyudi. 2017. “The Implementation of ESA Technique (Engage Study Activate) to Improve Students Listening Skill in the Academic Year of 2017/2018”. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Hammam, Ph.D Key words: Engage Study Activate (ESA), improvement, Classroom Action Research(CAR) , Listening Skill This graduating paper is composed based on the result of Classroom Action Research and the writer’s experiences during conducting research for three month in SMA N 1 Tuntang, Semarang. This research has objectives to know whether ESA Technique can improve the students’ listening skill and to know what happens when ESA Technique is implemented in teaching listening in the classroom. The research was conducted from 12July until 8September 2017 consisting of two cycles. Each cycle consists of one meeting. Every cycle consists of four steps: planning, implementing, observation and reflection. The writer collected the data by using qualitative and quantitative technique. The qualitative technique consists of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test, post-test 1, and pre test 2, post-test 2. Based on all the data collected as the research findings, it can be shown that ESA Technique enhances the students’ listening skill and the classroom atmosphere in teaching and learning listening activity. d. Based on the result of research from using ESA Technique in listening skill the writer conducted the mean of pre test1 58 (8.2%), and the post test 1 68 (55.5%), from the pre test 2 57 (5.3%), and post test 2 75 (98%), and the based on the finding t test cycle 1 -7.937 on the cycle 2 -12.528 its mean the technique is significant to improve listening skills. The improvement of classroom atmosphere was also gained among other things are students were motivated and interested in learning Listening in the class, they were focused and not noisy during teaching learning English process in the class, and they tended to be active learner and dare learner. This research result shows there are improvements in students’ listening skill and situation of the class. Based on that reason, it is recommended that the English teacher implement suitable techniques to his or her class and one of them is ESA Technique which has been proved and tested to improve students’ listening skill.
