Abstract

Arifin, Advalina August A. “A Descriptive Analysis of the Young Learners’ Reading Anxiety to Reading Aloud for the Eighth Grade of SMPIT Al Falah Simo in the Academic Year of 2017/2018”. Counselor: Hammam, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D. Anxiety is an individual’s reaction towards to negative feelings such as, fear, shame and nervousness, to something that must or will be faced. Researcher beats out young learners’ anxiety regards to reading anxiety that a physical and mental reaction that were experienced by young learners in reading session, especially when they are asked to read aloud in front of the class. Reading Anxiety affects young learners’ courage and abilities in reading performance. The purpose of the study is to describe young learners’ anxiety, included the level of reading anxiety and factors of anxiety. This study uses quantitative approach in order to describe the anxiety that was experienced by students explicitly. Researcher uses documentation of reading material, interview, and questionnaire as collecting data tools. In this research, researcher also uses Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS) to sum the total of score and percentage of students’ responses in order to categorize the students’ anxiety level. Based on the result, there are 19 students (65 %) who were included of medium anxiety and 10 students (35 %) who were included in high anxiety. Researcher found 3 students who had total of score more than 80 points. They are included in high anxiety level because their score is between 73-130 scores.. There is none of students in low anxiety. Researcher found the factors of anxiety that influenced the eighth grade students’ anxiety in SMP IT Al-Falah, such as: fearing to do mistake that makes the get shameness, unrecognizing or forgetting meaning of words and getting difficulty in pronunciation. Researcher finds changing monotonous situation of class, giving clues of material and discussing with friends can reduce students’ anxiety in reading aloud.
