Abstract

The objectives of the study are: (1) to know the implementation of photo collages in Project-Based learning to improve students' ability in writing recount text.(2) to find out the result of photo collages as an instructional media in Project-Based Learning will be effective to improve students' writing skill especially in recount text. The methodology of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they were: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research were 32 students of X class of MAN Salatiga. The data collected were qualitative but also supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained through observation and documentation. The data were in the form field notes, observation checklist and photographs. Meanwhile, the quantitative data was collected from the test. The researcher used SPSS based 16.00 for analyzing the test. The result of this research shows that (1) the implementation of photo collages in Project-Based learning to improve students' ability in writing recount text is really successful. The students who pass the passing grade improve gradually from the cycle I and the cycle II. The passing grade is 70. (2) The improvement of using photo collage in improving the students’ ability in writing recount text is significant. It can be seen from the cycle I up to the cycle II. The result of the cycle I, the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of the pre-test. The mean of post-test is 72.50 and pre-test are 66.91. In the cycle II, the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of the pre-test. The mean post-test is 75.38 and pre-test are 71.09. The result of T-test in cycle I is 7.758 and cycle II is 6.075. Moreover, the t-test in the cycle I was bigger than the t-test of the cycle II. From the result, the researcher concluded that using photo colleges can improve the ten-grade students’ ability in writing in recount text at MAN Salatiga.
