Abstract

ABSTRACT Setiyawan, Wahyu Fajar. 2019. The Use of Inquiry Method to Improve Students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills on Descriptive Text (A Classroom Action Research of Grade VIIA of SMPN 02 Banyu Biru in Academic Years of 2018/2019). Graduating paper. English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Hammam, S.Pd, M.Pd., Ph.D This research aims to improve students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) on descriptive text in the grade of 7A of SMPN 02 Banyu Biru in academic years of 2018/2019. The research found that students’ HOTS is less especially in English subject. To improve students HOTS, the researcher applied Inquiry Method. There are two cycles to examine this research. The number of students in this research were 32 students. In completing the research, the researcher used observation and documentation. The result of this research showed that the mean of cycle two was higher than the minimum score that determined by SMPN02 Banyu Biru, that is 70. The mean of students’ score in cycle I was 68 and the mean of students’ score in cycle II was 78. Based on the research, it concluded that the application of Inquiry Method was successful to improve students’ HOTS in grade VIIA of SMPN 02 Banyu Biru in academic years of 2018/2019.
