Abstract

Fauzia, Septiana. 2019. A Descriptive Analysis of Students’ Difficulties In Comprehending English Reading Text ( A Case Study of the Second Semester Students of English Department Students in IAIN Salatiga in Academic Year of 2018/2019). A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Ruwandi, S.Pd., M.A The aims of this research are to know the central tendencies of the comprehension, to know the skewness of the comprehension and to know standard deviation of the comprehension of second semester students of English Department of IAIN Salatiga in Academic year of 2018/2019. The method of this study was Quantitative research especially descriptive study. The techniques of collecting data were written test to know the students difficulties in English reading comprehension and documentation. The result of the study shows that the aspects reading comprehension are determining main idea, locating reference, understanding vocabulary, making inference, detailing information. The researcher measured central tendencies of reading comprehension aspects were the mean 5.65, median 5, and mode 5 (determining main idea). Locating reference, the mean 3.72, median 3.5, and the mode 3, understanding vocabulary were the mean 3.86, median 3, and mode 2. For making inference aspect were mean is 5.81, median 6, and mode 6. Detailing information, the mean is 4.84, median is 5 and mode 5. The skewness of the research were 1.68 for determining main idea. Second aspect, locating reference got 1.108. Third, understanding vocabulary got 1.751. Next, making inference got 0.633, the last detailing information got -0.582. The ratio of those aspects is in between -2 and 2 so it means it is in normal distribution. The standard deviation of five aspects are 1.433 for determining main idea, 1.899 for locating reference aspect, then 2.106 for understanding vocabulary, 1.444 for making inference and the last is detail information, it got 1.715. From the calculation, the researcher concluded three difficulties they are determining main idea, making inference and detail information which has low score.
