Abstract

ABSTRACT Waehama,Rusnah. (2019). The problems faced by Thai students in reading English texts at IAIN Salatiga. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Ruwandi,S.Pd.M.A The objectives of this research are to investigate the problems faced by Thai students in reading English texts and describe the strategies used by Thai students to overcome their reading English text. The research used descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected by using interview and documentation. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data. The researcher found some findings of the research focused on two research questions. There are about problems and strategies. The problem of Thai students in reading English texts is non-linguistic and linguistic. Non-Linguistic is caused by the fact that students rarely read a book, they don't remember the vocabulary and their environment rarely supports them about reading. For linguistic is caused English is a foreign language for them. They also rarely use the English language in everyday life. It makes them get difficult in pronunciation and lacking the vocabulary. And the strategies used by Thai students to overcome their reading English texts. There are in individual and communal. Individual, they practice and learn English by using the internet. For the communal, they ask a friend to teach and also learn from the tutor. Key Words: Thai students, Reading skill
