Abstract

Lestari, Yuni. 2019. IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH THE POWER OF TWO STRATEGY IN COOPERATIVE LEARNING (Classroom Action Research at The Twelfth Grade of SMK Diponegoro Salatiga in the Academic Year of 2019/2020), A Graduating Paper, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, English Education Department, State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Sari Famularsih, S.Pd.I., M.A. Keywords: Reading comprehension, strategy, The Power of Two, cooperative learning, classroom action research. The teacher and the researcher used The Power of Two strategy to improve the students’ reading skill. The objectives of this research were (1) to know how the application of The Power of Two strategy in cooperative learning to increase the students’ reading comprehension at the twelfth grade of SMK Diponegoro Salatiga, (2) to find out the result of The Power of Two strategy in cooperative learning to improve students’ reading comprehension at the twelfth grade of SMK Diponegoro Salatiga. The Power of Two is a cooperative learning strategy which divide the class into small group consist of two. This strategy helps students to build a strong relationship with their partner to discuss the material and develop the new knowledge collaboratively. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. By the data analysis, it showed that we found significant improvement. It could be seen by the percentage of students who passed the passing grade that is from 30% on pre-test increase to 75% on post-test in the Cycle I and from 60% on pre-test increase to 95% on post-test in the Cycle II. The improvement of students’ reading comprehension could be seen by the score of the pretest and post-test which is increase in each cycle. The mean in cycle I, it was increase from 63,50 to 82,25 and in the cycle II, it was increase from 77,75 to 84,00. Based on that fact, it can be conclude that The Power of Two strategy in cooperative learning could improve students’ reading comprehension succesfully.
