Abstract

Latifa, Evi Nur. 2019. The Correlation between Students’ Mastery of Vocabulary and Simple Past Tense toward Their Writing Ability in Recount Text for the Tenth Grade of MAN Salatiga in the Academic Year of 2018/2019. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. This research is intended to find out whether there is correlation between students’ mastery of vocabulary and simple past tense toward their writing ability in recount text for the tenth grade of MAN Salatiga in the academic year of 2018/2019. The methodology of research was quantitative research especially correlation design. The research was carried out at MAN Salatiga in the academic year of 2018/2019. The population was the tenth grade students of MAN Salatiga. While the sample was 37 students for each classes, X MIPA 1 (real test class) and X MIPA 4 (validity test class) taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was test. There are two kinds of test, multiple choice test to measure students’ mastery of vocabulary and simple past tense and writing test to measure students’ writing ability in recount text. In analyzing the data, the writer used multiple correlation and multiple linear regression by Person Product Moment formula assisted by SPPS version 25. The result of the research showed that the level of students’ vocabulary mastery and simple past tense was categorized as excellent. The mean score of vocabulary mastery was 90.68 and the mean score of simple past tense was 86.36. Then, the level of students’ writing ability in recount text was categorized as good. The mean score of students’ writing ability in recount text was 71.00. The result of correlation coefficient significant of students’ mastery of vocabulary and simple past tense toward their writing ability in recount text showed that the value of Fo (6.919) is higher than Ft (3.28) at the level of significance ? = 0.05 and df (degree of freedom) for n = 37 is 3.28. It can be conclude that the coefficient correlation is significant. It means that the correlation between the students’ mastery of vocabulary and simple past tense toward writing ability in recount text was significant. The writer concluded that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected in the research. Key words: Vocabulary, Simple Past Tense, Writing, Recount Text
