Keywords: Project Based Learning, Writing, Picture This research focuses on the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning to teach writing skills for eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Kedungjati. The objectives of the research are: (1) To find out whether there is difference between using project based learning and those who are not using project based learning approach. (2) To find out the effectiveness of using project based learning approach in improving students’ writing skill. This research is quasi experimental research. The technique of collecting data are test and documentation. There are two kinds of test which were used, those were pre-test and post-test. The subjects of this research are experiment class and control class of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kedungjati. It consist of 64 students. The data uses t-test formula by comparing the mean score of pre- and post-test from both groups. The significance level sets up 5%. The result of the research shows that, first, the students’ profile are different before and after implementing Project Based Learning. The mean of pre-test is 62.37 while the mean of post-test is 75.87. The difference between pre- and post-test mean is 13.50. Second, the result shows that t-test (to) 8.59 was higher than t-table (tt) 2.04 with the degree of freedom (df) 31. Therefore, there is significance difference after implementing Project Based Learning toward students’ writing skill in descriptive text. Moreover, the effect size of experiment group is 1.41 which shows that using Project Based Learning give strong effect on students’ writing skill in descriptive text.
