Abstract

This research is based on literature approach using qualitative method. Theoretically, this research uses social theories of cultural encounter such us assimilation theory, melting pot, salad bowl and contemporary discourses of multiculturalism. America is a pluralistic country with people living in diverse ethnics and cultures. The reality of plurality occuring in America does not only show diversity, but also tolerance, mutual understanding and work together in their diversity manifested in sense of harmony relationship. Historically, the development of religions in America is interesting. Several religions had come together along with the wave of immigration from all over the world. This historical background caused those religions to live in the daily life of American people. Then, the typology of the US religions is pluralistic due to the freedom of every religion to spread in that country such as Christian, Jews, Islam, Hindu, Buddha, Shikh, Confucianism, etc. Even the Civil Religion becomes a religion embraced and expressed by some American people.
