Abstract

the academic year of 2007/2008.The subject of this research is the first year students of SMP N l Wonosegoro,Boyolali, There are six classes and each class consists of 40 students. Totally there are239 students as the population. The writer takes 40% of the population to repsresenttotal students, they are 80 students, as the sample and the writer takes them from twoclasses. To get the data for wrtiting down this thesis, the writer applies severalmethods that can be divided into three types, they are: document study, experimentalresearch and statistical method.In this research, document study is applied to study available documents aboutthe first year students of SMP N l Wonosegoro in the academic year of 2007 /2008and experimental research tests (pre-test and post test). The researcher used data fromexperimental research to analyze the problems which will be answered in this thesis.The last analysis is using statistical method. The researcher used t-test formula tomeasure the significance of the comparative analysis.Based on those several methods applied above, the researcher discovered theresult that: 1) the English achievement of the first year students of SMP N lWonosegoro, Boyolali, in the academic year of 2007/2008, who are taught by usingDirect Method is lower than those who are taught by using Situational LanguageTeaching because the mean of Direct method is 59,85 while the mean of SituationalLanguage Teaching is 60,725, 2) there is a significant difference of Englishachievement of the first year students of SMP N 1 Wonosegoro, Boyolali, in theacademic year of 2007/2008 who are taught by Direct Method and those who aretaught by Situational Language Teaching because the result of t-test 3,804 is higherthan t-table 2.00, so the hypothesis is accepted.
