Abstract

vocabulary to the fourth year students of Elementary School using the Total PhysicalResponse (TPR) method and to identify the student's achievement of using the TPRmethod in teaching foreign language vocabulary. To achieve the objectives of thestudy, the writer conducts an action research. This classroom action research is heldat SD IT Al-Harornain, Mayong, Jepara. The subject of the study is the grade IV.There were 3 i students: 18 girls and l J boys. The writer carries out three steps. Thefirst step was the pre-test. The second step was the action. The actions consist of twocycles. The differences between these cycles are on topic of material use. Each cycleconsist of teaching and learning process and a test. The last steps are the post-test.The post-test meant is to answer the problems of the study. In analyzing the data, thewriter uses a descriptive qualitative and a simple quantitative measurement to find theresult. The analyses of the data shows that there is a significant difference of thestudents' achievement in the pre-test and post-test. The students' achievement in thepost-test (90 %) is higher than that of pre-test (44.50%). The average of the students'achievement in the first cycle is 44.55% and in the second cycle is 89.50%. Therelative frequency shows that the mastery level of vocabularies in the second cycle isbetter than that on the first cycie. The main factor affecting this improvement is thestudents' interest in teaching learning process through Total Physical Response.Based on this data. the writer concludes that teaching English vocabulary with TPR isvery beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning Englishvocabulary. It is suggested that TPR in teaching English vocabulary is recommendedfor the English teacher.
