## Abstract

This graduating paper intended to be a descriptive quantitative research.The writer applied questionnaire to find the score of student's reading interest, andthe writer applied test to find the score of grammar mastery of the first yearstudents of SMAN 3 Salatiga. Then, the writer applied correlation formula toprove the significant correlation between reading interest and grammar mastery.The result of this research shows that score of reading interest of the firstyear students of SMAN 3 Salatiga is fair. It can be seen from the result of readinginterest score is 61.77%. It shows that the students have less interest in readingEnglish book. Because they rarely go to library to read English book. So that theydon't read English book as a habitual activity. In this research also shows thatscore of grammar mastery of the first year students of SMAN 3 Salatiga in theacademic year of 2010/2011 is good. It is known from the result of score ofgrammar test is 73 .88%. It shows -that the students can do most of grammar testsand also understand the structure of text. In this research they understand grammarmaterial which their teacher teaches because they can understand teacher'sexplanation about grammar study. Then the result of correlation formula showsthat the r-calculation is 0.379. To know the significance of variable X to variableY, r-calculation is compared with r-table with the number of sample (36) studentsand the level of significance 5%(0.05), which is 0.329. It proves that r-calculationis almost same with r-table because of r-calculation is 0.379 while r-table is0.329. It also proves that there is low significant correlation between readinginterest and grammar mastery. Because reading interest of the first year studentsof SMAN 3 Salatiga in academic year of2010/2011 isn't so influence to student'sgrammar mastery. At large, there are any other aspects that influence student'sgrammar mastery.
