Abstract

The objectives of herresearch are to find out the English vocabulary mastery of the first year studentsof SMA N 1 Suruh in the academic year of 2011/2012, to describe the process ofteaching vocabulary through mind mapping and to find out the extents of usingmind mapping strategy towards the improvement of students' vocabulary mastery.The research method that is used in this research is classroom action research. Thewriter uses two cycles, each cycle consist of planning, action, observation andreflection. The result of her research shows that there is an improvement of thestudents' vocabulary mastery using mind mapping. It can be seen from the t-testcalculation in cycle 1 is 4,5 and in cycle 2 is 9,72; t-table with n = 20 is 2,09. Thisindicates that by applying mind mapping, the students' vocabulary mastery hasimproved.
