Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important elements in learning foreignlanguage. In the international relationship, English speaking ability is veryimportant to be able to participate in the wider world of work. The speaking skillis measured in terms of the ability to carry out a conversation in the language.This reality makes teachers and parents think that speaking ability should bemastered by their students and children; In this case the writer would like toemphasize the interesting method in teaching speaking in which appropriate forthe students. The method is role play. Role play is one of the techniques chosenfor teaching speaking. Role play can improve student's participation and theircompetence in learning speaking. Through this activity, the students are free todevelop their imagination and speak up without considering it with a set ofpattern. There are some advantages by applying role play such as; it could give thestudents' new feeling in conversation session, the students' learn how to expressideas, opinions, or feeling to others by using words or sounds of articulation.
