Abstract

ABSTRACT Wardayani, Nurul. 2020. An Analysis Slang Words Produced by Members of Indonesian Hunters English Club on WhatsApp Group. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Satate Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counselor : Sari Famularsih, S.Pd.I, M.A. The aims of this research are to find out the following research questions such as what are the slang words used, the type and dominant type of slang words that produced by members of Indonesian Hunters English Club on WhatsApp group. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The techniques of collecting data was through the observation and documentation based on members’ chats of Indonesian Hunters English Club on WhatsApp Group. The result of this study showed 335 chats data analyzed, 26 data of slang words were found. In this study found that the members produced some slang words although sometimes they also used formal words. However, the researcher have found some slang words produced by the members. There are dude, guys, no biggie, go bananas, nuts, up to my neck, the zeal, pity, heads up, keep our finger, cheers up, lit, gonna, wanna, gotta, dunno, hafta, tryna, lemme,BTW, COD, LOL, till, math, edu, and bcz. The researcher also found five types of slang word based on the theory by Allan and Burridge on the members’ chats. The researcher found 2 fresh and creative, 10 flippant, 7 imitative, 3 acronym and 4 clipping. Each of type has different frequency in the slang words usage. The dominant types were found after calculating the data used the theory by Thorsten. The imitative type has score 40% as the highest slang found, followed by flippant type with score 27,5%, then the fresh and creative type with score 17,5 %, and the last are the acronym and clipping type that has same score with 7,5%. So, the dominant type of slang word based on frequency of slang words usage is imitative type with the slang word wanna. Keywords : Slang, Type, Dominant Type, WhatsAapp Group.
