Abstract

Fajarini, Venti. 2020. The Use Of Four Square Mrthod To Improve Student Writing Skills In Descriptive Text (The Seventh Grade Of SMP Persatuan Mertoyudan Magelang In Academic Year 2019/2020) A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. This research aims at finding out whether and to what extent the use of four square writing method improves students’ writing skill. Besides, this research also aims at identifying the students’ motivation when four square writing method is implemented at seventh grade students of SMP Persatuan Mertoyudan. The method used in this research is classroom action research. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview , documention and tests. The methodology of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they were: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research were 20 students of VII A SMP Persatuan Mertoyudan. The data collected were qualitative but also supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained through observation and documentation. The data were in the form field notes, observation checklist and photographs. Meanwhile, the quantitative data was collected from the test. The researcher used SPSS based 16.00 for analyzing the test. The researcher conducted the tests before (pre-test) and after (post-test). The mean score of each test was compared to know the students improvements in writing skill. Based on the result of the research and discussion, there is significant improvement of the students’ product in writing descriptive text using four square method. It can be seen from students’ scores of pre-test and post-test. It is shown in the mean of students’ score of pre-test in cycle I and cycle II are 64.9688 and 71.9062. The mean of pre-test in cycle II (71.9062) is higher than the mean of pre-test in cycle I (64.9688). While using four square method the students’ score of posttest in cycle I and II are 70.7812 and 77.7188. The mean of post-test in cycle II (77.7188) is higher than the mean of post-test in cycle I (70.7812). It means that using four square method in the students' writing skill in descriptive text was improved. Keyword: four square method, writing , descriptive text
