Abstract

AN ANALYSIS OF COHESION AND COHERENCE IN WRITING PARAGRAPH (A CASE STUDY OF THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF IAIN SALATIGA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Advisor: Hammam, S.Pd.,M.Pd., Ph.D. The aim of this research are to find out the cohesion and coherence problems and the cause of the problems find in paragraph written by the third semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the Academic Year 2019/2020. The type of this research was qualitative research which analyzed by qualitative content analysis proposed by Mayring (2014:82).The method that used in this research were using test, documentation, and interview. The finding of this research shows students? problem in cohesion is disappearance of ellipsis, while students? problem in coherence is logical order. Furthermore, the cause of students? problems is the students cannot state a clear and accurate the main idea or topic sentence is not in the right place, neither in the first paragraph nor in the last paragraph Keywords: Cohesion; Coherence; Paragraph
