Abstract

This research aimed to analyze Thai students’ difficulties in parts of speech mastery. More specifically, this research is conducted to analyze Thai students’ language background, to analyze how is Thai students’ ability in English parts of speech mastery, to examine the difficulties faced by Thai students in mastering parts of speech, and to examine the factors that cause students get difficulties in mastering parts of speech. The participants of this research were eight Thai female students who study in English Department of IAIN Salatiga. The limitation of this study is focused on Thai students’ difficulties in parts of speech. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The techniques of collecting the data are test, interview and document. The result is that there are 10.7% students who have difficulties in underline noun with the total of incorrect is 6, there are 12.5% students who have difficulties in underline pronoun with the total of incorrect is 7, there are 3.6% students who have difficulties in underline verb with the total of incorrect is 2, there are 19.64% students who have difficulties in underline adverb with the total of incorrect is 11, there are 14.28% students who have difficulties in underline adjective with the total of incorrect is 8, there are 25% students who have difficulties in underline preposition with the total of incorrect is 14, there are 14.28% students who have difficulties in underline determiner with the total of incorrect is 8. The factors that causes Thai students get difficulties in mastering parts of speech are a lack of vocabulary, rarely to improve vocabulary, synonymous words, and more than one language that is used by Thai students.
