Abstract

Marwan. 2020. An Analysis of the Difficulties Encountered by English Department Students in TOEFL Test of Listening Section. Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Salatiga State Institute for Islamic Studies. Counselor: Dra. Widyastuti, M.Pd. This study was aimed to analyse the difficulties encountered by English Department students in TOEFL test of listening section. This research also investigated the strategies used by the students to overcome the difficulties in listening for TOEFL test. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects were nineteen students of eighth semester of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. Questionnaire, Interview, and documentation were used to collect the data. For analysing the data, the researcher used data analysis from Miles and Huberman (2014) with data condensation, data reduction, conclusion and drawing verification. Method of triangulation was used for trustworthiness of the data. The research finding showed that there are three types of difficulties faced by students. They are related with the material, related with the listener, and related with the physical setting. Bored and fatigue with long spoken text is difficulty that is most faced for the material because it has the percentage 63,2%. Difficult when finding the unknown words is most faced by the students for the listener factor with the percentage 57,9%. Difficult to concentrate if there are noises is most faced for the physical setting with the percentage 84,2%. The students used strategy from Bingol et al (2014) with cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, and socio-affective strategy. For cognitive, there are 10,5% students who used this strategy. For metacognitive, there are also 10,5% students who used this strategy. The students who used socio-affective are just 5,3%. There are 10,5% students who used strategy related with physical setting. The other students used their own strategy with listening music, watching movie without subtitle, focus on the second speaker for part A, and focus on the spoken text. It has the percentage 68,4%.
