Abstract

ABSTRACT Hidayasari, Cicik Nurul. 2020. An Error Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Error in Writing Report Text Based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy at the Fourth Semester of English Education Department of Iain Salatiga. A Graduating paper, English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN Salatiga). Counsellor: Heru Saputra, M.A. Writing is one of the most difficult skills to be mastered for the English students and grammar knowledge is important in the writing process. To improve their writing skill, they need to a lot practices, and in practising they make error in language. The objectives of this research were to describe types of errors and to know the sources of the error in writing report text based on surface strategy taxonomy at the fourth semester of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. This research used qualitative research. The data source were collected from the students’ writing of fourth semester. Dulay’s, Burt, Krashen theory becomes the main key the data analysis. To find out the source of error the researcher used comparative analysis. Based on the analysis of the grammatical errors, there are four types of errors were found, which are error of omission, error of misinformation, error of addition, and error of misordering. Based on research finding the students made total of 55 errors. Omission error was found 31 times. Misinformation error occurred 13 times, addition error was committed 8 times, and misordering errors 3 times. As for the source of errors, four types of error affected the occurrence of students’ errors. These four errors as follows. Developmental or intraligual errors was found 40 times, unique errors 6 times, interlingual errors occurred 2 times, and ambiguous errors was produced 7 times.
