Abstract

This study conducted in order to improve the students‟ speaking skill on eleventh grade students of SMK Diponegoro Salatiga through Spontaneous Group Discussion. The study is related to the result of a preliminary study showed that the students were still poor in English speaking skill, especially in giving interpersonal response. This study used a classroom action research which is conducted to solve the students‟ problem in English speaking. The classroom action research was done based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart‟s (2010) concept. The researcher did to cycles in which each cycle consists of planning, action, observation and reflection. Each cycle consists of two meetings. The data were gathered through quantitative data. The quantitative data were obtained from the students speaking score of pre-test and post-test. The finding of the study show that the implementation of spontaneous Group Discussion was successful since the criteria of success were achieved. The first criterion was 75% of students could pass the target score ≥ 70.0 based on the KKM. The findings show that 81,25% of the students had already achieved the target score. Besides, the second criterion was the students who become more active involved in teaching learning process. Based on the findings of the study, the writer suggest that the English teacher could implement Spontaneous Group Discussion in teaching speaking in order to motivate students in learning English speaking
