Abstract

This study is a classroom action research. The general objective of this study is How to improve students’ writing skills through Scaffolding technique, while the specific objectives of this research are (1) to find out the students’ problems toward their writing skills. (2) to find out To find out the improvement of the students’ writing skills which using scaffolding technique. This classroom action research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah (Plus) Salatiga. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data were collected from achievement test and observation. The observation during the process of English teaching and learning was conducted with the help from collaborator. In this research, the writer acted as the practitioner. The tests were in the form of pre-test and post-test conducted in cycle 1 and cycle 2 which the students were asked to write narrative text. The results are: (1) The researcher found that almost of students had some problems in writing skills such as; arranging words to be sentence, limitation of vocabularies, grammatical error, technical in writing such as; punctuation, spelling and capitalized, and motivation in learning process especially in writing skills. It can be seen in the score of pre -test. There are only 13,043% of 23 students that can get score 71 -80, 17,391% in score 61-70, 13,043% in score 51-60 and 56,521% in score less than 50. (2) Using scaffolding technique can improve students’ writing skill s, it is proved with the students’ improvement score of the tests because mean of pre-test is 54,782, the mean of post-test cycle I is 68, 173, and the mean of post-test cycle II is 78,130. The T-calculation is 9, 632. The result showed that the T-calculation was higher than T-table (1, 175).
