Abstract

This research focuses on language styles and varieties by South-East Asian Students on social media. This research aims to answer the following research questions: (1) How does the use of English variation interfere English as second language in South-East Asian Countries? (2) What are the kind of English variations, which are made by each South-East Asian? The data source of this research are posts, captions, chats, and comments that occurs on WhatsApp, Twitter, IG and, Facebook. At the end, the researcher draws the conclusion which is in accordance with the research finding. The results of the study show that (1) The English Status as second language in South-East Asian Country including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Philippine. They use both of standard English and colloquial or new English depending on the context. Standard English is used in formal situation and the new English is used in informal situation. New English varieties such as “leh, meh, lah,etc.” don’t have particular or lexical meaning, but it has function. Due to the geographic and the cultures of language acquired from Malay Language, those languages are compiled almost similar, except Taglish or Tagalog English. Taglish is rather difficult than other due to the combining words not only from Tagalog and English but also from Spanish Language such “Para” and “Anuena”. In structure, they mixed verbs, conjunctions, prepositions, adjectives, etc. It made more difficult than the new English from Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. The English Status as foreign language in South-East Asian Country including Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar. They don’t have any differences of the way how they speak or write based on standard English of American and British. They just made the differences in pronunciation, abbreviation, emotions which made the differences. But it does not give a huge impact to standard English. (2) Talking with new person, those who status English as second language used to apply the standard English. New English is commonly used to communicate with people in informal situation such as talking with close friends, family, and connecting on social media.
