Abstract

This research is mainly aimed to find out the enhancement of students’ skill in writing using authentic printed materials for the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Miri Sragen in the academic year of 2018/2019. The subject of this research is the VIII B class. The objectives of this study are (1) to find out whether the use of authentic printed materials can enhance students skill in writing. (2) to find out how far the enhancement of students’ skill in writing by using authentic printed materials. The methodology of the research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle contains four steps, planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The result of this research shows that (1) There is an enhancement in students’ writing skill. It can be seen from the mean score of pre-test and post-test from cycle 1 and cycle 2. In the cycle 1, the mean of pre-test is 63.82 and post-test is 76.26. Then, the mean score of pre-test in cycle 2 is 78 and the mean of post-test is 90.36. (2) Meanwhile, the enhancement of students skills in writing for the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Miri Sragen is successful. It can be seen from the percentage of the students who passed the passing grade. The passing grade of English lesson is 75. The percentage of the students who passed the passing grade in the pre-test of cycle 1 is 26.08% and in the post-test is 56.52%. Then in cycle 2, the students who passed the passing grade in pre-test is 59.09% and in the post-test is 90.09%. So, the enhancement of students who passed the passing grade in the cycle 1 is 30.43% and in the cycle 2 is 31.81%. Furthermore, The result of the t-test in cycle I and cycle 2 are bigger then t-table. The value of the t-test in cycle 1 is 5.06 and the t-table with df 22 is 2.07. Then in cycle 2, the value of the t-test is 10.52 and the t-table with df 21 is 2.08. The result of the research shows that authentic printed materials are able to enhance the students writing skill of the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Miri Sragen in the academic year of 2018/2019.
