Abstract

ABSTRACT Nurmayawati, Yulfita. 2019. A Descriptive Study on the use of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning to Support Learning Activities Inside and Outside the Classroom. A Graduating Paper. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. English Education Department. State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Conselor: Norwanto, Ph.D. The objectives of this research are; to find out students’ perceptions on the use of mobile phone to support learning activities, the benefits provided by mobile phone to support learning activities inside and outside the classroom and the engagement of students in using mobile phone to support learning activities inside and outside the classroom. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The data collected by interviewing 15 students and doing classroom observation as well. The participants were the fifth semester students of English Education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. The findings stated that students had positive perceptions on the use of mobile phone. They perceived that; mobile phone is very useful to support learning activities, and mobile phone makes teaching and learning process more interesting and easier. The findings also indicated some benefits of mobile phone to support learning activities. they were; mobile phone enable students to do various things (flexible), mobile phone offers availability, connectivity and portability, it promotes autonomous learning, minimizing students’ expense (low-cost), and it supports students in improving English skills. The last, students were engaged with their phone by using several applications such as offline dictionary, PDF reader, Grammarly, camera, audio player, web browsers, YouTube, WhatsApp and LINE.
