Abstract

ABSTRACT Sofiatun, Dwi. 2019. An Analysis on Forms and Functions of Code-Switching and Code-Mixing used by Indonesian Netizens. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Hanung Triyoko, S.S., M.Hum., M.Ed. The aims of this research are to find out the forms of Code-Switching and Code-Mixing used by Indonesian netizen and to examine the functions of Code- Switching and Code-Mixing used by Indonesian netizens. The methodology of this study was descriptive qualitative research. The techniques of collecting data were observing and analyzing the interactions of Indonesian netizens through their comments in public figure’s posted photo. The result of the study shows that 385 unit of analysis of Code-Switching found that 49 data used tag switching, 217 data used inter-sentential switching and 119 used intra-sentential switching. It showed that inter-sentential switching is commonly used by Indonesian netizens in the comments on posted photo by public figure. Furthermore, 555 units data analysis of Code-Mixing performed 299 insertion of words, 114 insertion of phrases, 156 insertion of hybrids, and 7 insertion of reduplications. Based on the data, netizens commonly used insertion of word to mix the code. Then, from 385 unit of analysis of Code-Switching, the researcher found seven functions in netizen’s comments. There are 10 quotation, 42 addressee specifications, 7 repetitions, 44 interjections, 75 message qualifications, 50 personalization and objectivizations, and 57 facility of expressions. Based on the data, the common function mostly used by netizensis message qualification. Moreover, the researcher just found five functions from 555 units data. There are 41 addressee specifications, 3 repetitions, 15 interjections, 12 message qualifications, 15personalization and objectivizations, and 469 facility of expressions. The function mostly used by the speaker in mixing the code is facility of expressions. Keywords: Code-switching, Code-mixing, Netizens
