Abstract

The object of this research is the first year students of MAN 1 Magelang.There are six classes of the first year student available in that school and eachclass contain 38 or 40 students. Totally of them are 238 students in population.The writer taking 20 % of the population for represent from totally students thereare 40 students and the writer take the sample in one class, this method is taken byfigured on certain goals. This method is called purposive sample. To gets the datafor writing down this thesis the writer applied several methods and can be dividefor three types there are: document study, field research, and statistical methods.Document study applied with studied about documents which are availablein the first year of MAN 1 Magelang academic year 2006/2007. Field researchapplied which consist oftest, interview, and observation. The researcher used datafrom field research to analyze the problems which will be answered in this thesis.The last analysis is used statistical methods namely t-test formula to measure howsignificant of the influence of giving reading assignment.Based on applied several methods above the researcher discovered theresult that: (1) The average score reading comprehension achievement in the firstyears of MAN 1 Magelang before giving reading assignment is 58,75, it belongsto poor to average level and after giving reading assignment is 67,55, it belongs toaverage to good level. (2) Based on the result oft-test analysis shows 5,64. Then itis compared with the figure on the t-table with 1 % of significance in degree offreedom 39 shows 2,423. Because the t-test (t-empiric) value is higher than Hable(t-theoreticy value so giving reading assignment to students will have significantinfluence toward students in reading comprehension achievement. (3) Based onthe data which received, one of the suitable ways toward reading comprehensionachievement in the first years of MAN 1 Magelang is giving reading assignment.
