Abstract

The research is intended ro he a descriptive studv, and the wnter use'documentation as the wav to collect the data Documeruauon. in this case is the textof Westlifes songs cassette The writer takes 10 t tcn : songs from the first albumwhich 1;:; published in 2000. Soledad and Puzzle or Mv Heart Thegoal is merely to describe the problems that had been stated beforeFrom the analvsis. it can he concluded that there are 71 i seventv one 1f1 gurati ve languages used in West Ii te Songs (rnetonyrny 37°'0, hyperbole 24 u,o_personification 13%, paradox 11 %, metaphor 7%, simile 4%1, and apostrophe 4%1)Westlifes songs have many connotation meanings based on the data analysis. Thewriter found more connotation meanings than denotation ones (Connotation 59% andDenotation 41 %1)The achievements of this research are expected to give some contributions tofurther study of figurative language Practically, the study will give additionalcontribution to the English students and English lecturers. And this study willcontribute the English lecturers in their English teaching process Theoretically, thestudy will add the literature in linguistic. So that other student's research, will use itas one of literature reviews in their linguistic study to find out some other aspect ofthese songs. Enrich our knowledge in understanding the figurative language, mainlythe figurative language used in Westlife's songs.
