Abstract

Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a new innovative approach ineducation discussed by many practitioners with the philosophy that students learnwhen they see meaning in academic material, and they see meaning in schoolworkwhen they can connect new information with prior knowledge and their ownexperience. At the same time, an English teacher is demanded to have asystematic lesson plan that enables them to run the teaching and learning processappropriately. Two well-known high schools in Surakarta i.e. MAPK and SMAAssalam have attempted to adapt the CTL approach into their English lessonplans, and have successfully proven that this approach can really maximizestudents' achievements in English. This particular research is intended to revealthe secret behind the success of the implementation of CTL in English lessonplans that these two high schools possess, thus, it is conducted as an account ofidentifying, knowing, and analyzing the implementation of CTL in the Englishlesson plans. The design for this research is descriptive qualitative study byapplying the framework of CTL and Lesson Plans theories. At the end, thediscussions of this research move from the descriptive analysis to comparativeanalysis due to the selection of two high schools as the objects of study. Thecomparison will investigate the implementation of CTL in five aspects of lessonplans i.e. instructional goals, objectives, activities, instructional media, andassessment. From the comparison, it is found that the English lesson plans forgrade X possessed by MAPK Surakarta has a better implementation of CTL thanthe English lesson plans for grade X possessed by SMA Assalam Surakarta.
