Abstract

Nur Hidayah. 2019. The Use of Concept Mapping to Improve Stusents’ Writing Skills for the Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Suruh in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. A graduating paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counselor: Hanung Triyoko, S.S.,M.Hum.,M.Ed. Keywords: Writing Skills, Concept Mapping. The researcher conducted the research to improve the students’ writing skills by using Concept Mapping. The research answers two problems of research (1) How is the the implementation of concept mapping to improve students’ writing skills at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Suruh in the academic year of 2019/2020? and (2) How significant is the improvement of the students’ writing skills by using concept mapping at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Suruh in the academic year of 2019/2020? The research design was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. The teacher analyzed the students’ writing skills in each cycle. The data is obtained by giving pre-test and post-test in each cycle. The result shows that the students are very enthusiastic and there are improvements of students’ enthusiasm in English lesson especially in writing subject and there are improvements in students’ writing skills. It can be seen at the mean of pre-test and post-test. In cycle I the mean of pre-test and post-test were 71.09 up to 78.19. The mean of pre-test and post-test in cycle II are 75.03 and 83.28. The process of the research took place for three weeks, precisely it is four meetings. In cycle I, the improvement is 43.8%. There are 71.9 % students who passed the passing grade 75. In the cycle II, the improvement is 50% . There are 90.6 % students who passed the passing grade 75. It means that the students could the target of passing grade 85% and be successful. Based on the analysis the researcher concludes that the students of tenth grade in SMA Negeri 1 Suruh can improve their students’ writing skills by using concept mapping.
