Abstract

ABSTRACT Umami, Nurul. 2020. Improving Students' Reading Comprehension Using True or False Strategy at the Eighth Grade Students’ of SMP Islam Karangrayung in the Academic Year 2019/2020. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. The objectives of the studies are: (1) to describe the implementation of using true or false strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension in learning English at class VIII A students of SMP Islam Karangrayung in the Academic Year 2019/2020, (2) to know how far is the improvement of students’ reading comprehension using true or false strategy at class VIII A students of SMP Islam Karangrayung in the Academic Year 2019/2020 The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of this research were 27 students’ of VIII A at the SMP Islam Karangrayung. The data were collected qualitatively and was supported by quantitative data. The qualitative were gained through observation and documentation. The data were in the form field notes, documentation, and observation checklist. Meanwhile, the quantitative data was collected from pretest and post-test. The researcher used SPSS 16.00 for analyzing the test. The outcomes of this research show that (1) the implementation of true or false strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension in learning English at class VIII A students of SMP Islam Karangrayung is really successful. The students’ who passed the passing grade improve gradually from the cycle I to the cycle II. The passing grade is 66. (2) The improvement of using true or false strategy in improving the students’ reading comprehension in English class was significant. It can be seen from the results of this research; each cycle shows that the score of students’ reading comprehension was improved. It can be seen by the percentage of students who passed the passing grade. In the cycle 1 the improvement is 7.41 and improvement in cycle 2 is 14.81. in the end of the cycle the percentages of students who passed the passing grade is 92.59. The mean of pre-test in cycle I is 60.52 and the mean of post test is 64.70, while the mean of pretest cycle II is 79.40 and the mean of post-test is 77.50. The result of T-test in cycle I is 6.824 and cycle II is 14.221. Furthermore, the t-test in cycle II is higher than t-test of the cycle I. Based on the explanation above, the writer concluded that the students’ reading comprehension improved after taught using true or false strategy in learning English.
