Abstract

Abstract: Dzun Nun al-Mishri is an Islamic Sufi leader of the third century who laid the foundations for the theory about Ma'rifat that has been his trade mark in Sufism Studies until now. His position is considered significant in Sufism, since he was the first person in Egypt to address the Guardians or Sufi Ahwaal and Maqamat. Abdurahman al-Jami in al-Uns' Nafahat identifies him as a Sufi leader relating to other Sufis, or translating their teachings into the Dzun Nun al-Mishri teachings. The aim of this article is to determine the position and contribution of Dzun Nun al-Mishri as a Sufi figure in the formulation of the theory and classification of ma'rifat in Sufism. Moreover, this article also elaborates that, in Dzun Nun al-Mihsri 's opinion, the moral purpose of ma'rifat is to make the human interest of humanity entirely framed with God's morality. Using an analytical descriptive method, this article concluded that, in Dzun Nun Al-Mishri 's view, ma'rifah for the Sufi is God's knowledge and vision beyond knowledge of any sort. Ma'rifah's main characteristic is God's gift in the Sufis' inner light. Ma'rifah was achieved by the Sufi after a long interaction experienced directly by the Sufi. When the Sufi reaches Ma'rifah, he's going to try to make himself an act of God. Ma'rifah is a continuous process of knowing God. The more Sufi knows about God, the more he will be encouraged to know God more and more deeply. According to the Sufi, what a person has imagined about God is not as imagined by God. Ma'rifah is that in quality as a Sufi wants to understand God more and more, even if he knows God absolutely and fully. Ma'rifah which is accomplished by a Sufi will affect the moral and activity levels in his life.
