Abstract

ABSTRACT Wijiati, Dini. 2020. An Error Analysis Of Direct And Indirect Speech Written By Second Semester Students Of English Education Department Of State Institute For Islamic Studies Salatiga In The Academic Year 2019/2020. A Graduating Paper Submitted to the Board of Examiners as a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Bachelor Degree of Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd). State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Aprilian Ria Adisti, M.Pd. This research aimed to analyze the errors made by the second semester students of English Education Department in writing Direct and Indirect Speech. More specifically, this research is conducted to find out what errors are made by the students and what dominant error are made by the students in changing Direct and Indirect Speech. The writer used the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was second semester students of English Education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga in the Academic Year 2019/2020. There were 30 respondents chosen randomly. The data of this research taken from written test through google form. The writer used written tests to analyze the error made by students. Moreover, the writer only focused on analyzing the statement sentences type of Direct and Indirect Speech. Based on the data, the researcher found three types of errors made by the students in their written through the test: Omission, Addition, and Misformation. There are 117 errors or 33% in Omission. There are 47 errors or 13% in Addition. And there are 196 errors or 54% in Misformation. There are no errors found in Misordering and Blends made by the students. After knowing the data preceded and the percentage of errors made by students, it can be interpreted that the dominant error made by students is Misformation with the highest percentage.
