Abstract

Ristanti, Lilis. (2020): “An Analysis of Students’ English Speaking Anxiety in English Class at the Second Semester Students of Islamic Education Department Students of IAIN Salatiga in the Academic Year 2019/2020”. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Institute for Islamic Studies of Salatiga. Counsellor: Nur Muthmainnah, M.Pd. The purposes of this research are to find out the levels of students’ English speaking anxiety in English class and the factors of students’ English speaking anxiety in English class. The type of the research was mixed-method research. The sample of the research were 30 second semester students of PAI F. The techniques of collecting data applied by the writer were questionnaire (closed questionnaire), interview (open-ended question) and documentation. The data which had been collected were analyzed by using the theory from Horwitz to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety and Kota Ohata’s theory to find out the factors of speaking anxiety in English class. The finding showed that there are 18 (60%) students who have mildly anxious level, 8 (27%) students who have relaxed level of speaking anxiety in English class, 2 (7%) students who have very relaxed level when they face speaking, 1 (3%) student who have very anxious level and there is 1 (3%) student who have anxious level of speaking in English class. Further, the writer find there are four factors that cause speaking anxiety in English class. First, learner beliefs about language learning, there are 8 students who say that their speaking anxiety in English class is due to their nervousness and fear of making mistake. Second, personal and interpersonal anxiety, there are 15 students who feel anxiety because of limited vocabulary and bad grammar. Third, instructor beliefs about language tecahing, there are 2 students who feel anxious bacause they are nervous with the spoken question given by the lecturer. The last, language testing, there are 5 students who have anxious because they feel inferior when speak English in the class. Keywords: English Speaking, Students’ Speaking Anxiety, English Class
